Huoneentaulu- Project I am a finnish artist and craftsperson currently living in Dupont, Washington. I am collecting pictures and stories of hand embroidered wallhangings with aphorisms made by finnish women 50-100 years ago. (They would say things like "Home sweet Home" in finnish). If something was written on the wall, it had to have meaning for the families and communities. I am afraid that this tradition will be lost, as these handiworks have no resale value and are being thrown out after their owners die. This multiple year project will be completed in three phases. In the first phase, which I am working on right now, I will collect images and stories of wallhangings and create handpulled prints based on them. I am searching for a vocabulary of recurring fonts, ornaments and themes that appeared on the traditional handcrafts. After getting a feeling for what the embroidered crafts are speaking to me, I want to make letterpress and linocut prints based on them. The two printmaking techniques are also very antique, so I feel they will work well in bringing new life to an old art form. The second part is exhibiting the prints around Finland and the US, and printing postcards from the original prints. The third part will be a book that shows the traditional handcrafted wall hangings, the new prints based on them and has an essay on what I found through my research. Nimeni on Mirka Hokkanen, ja olen suomalainen taiteilija ja käsityoläinen. Kerään kuvia ja kertomuksia suomalaisista käsin kirjailluista huoneentauluista joissa on jokin teksti. Jos jotain oli kirjoitettu seinille, se oli tärkää perheille ja yhteisöille. Haluaisin tietää mitä ne asiat olivat. Pelkään että huoneentaulujen perinne katoaa, jos sitä ei säilytetä mitenkään. Vanhat merkkausliinat ovat kovassa huudossa, mutta arkiset huoneentaulut eivät tunnu ilmaantuvan kirpputoreilla tai huutokaupoissa. Usean vuoden projekti on kolmeosainen. Ensimmäiseksi kerään kuvia ja tietoja mahdollisimman monesta huoneentaulusta ja rupean tyollistämään niistä saadulla tiedolla omaa taidetta grafiikan vedoksina. Etsin käsitoistä toistuvia aakkosia, teemoja ja ornamentteja. Tulen käyttämään antiikki-kirjapainoa ja kohopainantaa jotka ovat myos vanhoja grafiikan menetelmiä. Ne soveltuvat hyvin tähän vanhan käsityöntaidon uuden elämän luomiseen. Projektin toinen vaihe ovat taidenäyttelyt USA:ss ja Suomessa ja postikorttien painatus grafiikan vedoksista.
