Learn to Draw a Korean Magpie Sussy from K-pop Demonhunters
Follow along this tutorial for Sussy from the K-Pop Demonhunters movie. I love the character duo together with the tiger as they provide some comedic relief. The video belows shows the steps to draw live, and scroll down for drawn directions. Download a free PDF with the drawing steps from my free resources page HERE (or scroll down to bottom of post).
Did you know…
In Korea the magpie represents good fortune and luck and it’s the national bird of Korea. Magpies are often represented in traditional Korean paintings alongside tigers, to warn and protect people of the tiger’s presence. Over time the magpie became symbolic for the common people, while the tiger represented the aristocracy and the paintings were a secret rebellion against the ruling class. You can find more about the history and symbolism of magpies in Korean culture here.
Step-by-Step Drawing Tutorial
1
Start with a long shape similar to a waterdrop on it’s side. Use a pencil so you can erase some lines later.
2
Add a line about as long as the drop shape to the top tilting to the left a bit. Add a second line to the bottom, almost at the tip. Angle that line to the left a bit more.
3
Add a long curved line to make a neck and belly for Sussy. Connect the line to the other line at the bottom.
4
Add circles like a bullseye to the top of the wing, and a curved line next to it. Add a curved line to the top for the bottom of the beak.
5
Add a curved line for the top of the beak, and another line going up from the head tapering towards the other line. Add a curved line on the chest and a few dots. Add two straight lines to the bottom for legs.
6
Add a line across the top for the rim of the hat, and two lines on the bottom for the feet. You can also add three lines inside the wing.
7
Choose what shape eye you want to do and draw three eyes going down the side of the head. Add a small line in the hat.
8
Color all the dark areas in. You can also add yellow for the eyes and multicolor highlights if you want.
